During this season, we were given random lines from poetry, songs, or the organizer’s brain, and had to write based on that.
Out of 18 contestants, the top 6 made the playoffs. I finished first in my conference and made it all the way to the finals for the second time in a row. And, for the second time in a row, I lost.
Week 1: Let’s start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. When you read you begin with A-B-C. When you sing you begin with do-re-mi.
Week 2: “I grow old . . . I grow old . . .I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.”
Week 3: “She said the theme of this party’s the industrial age. And you came in dressed like a train wreck.”
Week 4: “Disremembered and unaccounted for, she cannot be lost because no one is looking for her, and even if they were, how can they call her if they don’t know her name?”
Week 5: “The first time we ever quarreled you were cutting an onion in the kitchen of our cottage”
Week 6: “I want my old friends. I want my old face. I want my old mind. Fuck this time and place.”
Week 7: “Wait. Don’t go too early. You’re tired. But everyone’s tired. But no one is tired enough.”
Week 8: “The children have brought their wood turtle into the dining hall because they want us to feel the power they have when they hold a house in their own hands.”
Week 9: “And my heart’s breaking faster than my will not to call you ’Cause when you said that you wanted me I thought it was true”
Week 10: “There are SO many things I regret about last evening. . . . I made spaghetti in the microwave.”
Week 11: “Fifty years ago, I invented a society for the abolition of Christmas. So far I am the only member. That is all I have to say on the subject.”
Week 12: “A lily is sprouting from my head. First I love it, then I want it dead.”
Semifinals: ’My past,’ she told the room, ‘is littered with the bones of men who were foolish enough to think I was someone they could sleep on.’”
Finals: “They were never handsome and often came with a hormone imbalance manifested by corpulence, a yodel of a voice or ears big as kidneys. But each was brave.”
