4: A Day in the Life

Verdict: #1 on the Rolling Stone list. A gorgeous, dreamy song that highlights both Paul and John’s strengths. I rather enjoy the repetition of the last groove on the record, though I may have been annoyed had I actually owned this on record and the final phrase went on indefinitely without a fade-out.
3. She Came In Through the Bathroom Window

Verdict: When Polythene Pam ends I always get a huge adrenaline rush. “Oh, look out!” I love every second of this song. It never lets up. “Tuesday’s on the phone to me!” is my favorite crescendo in a Beatles song, and it leads into Golden Slumbers. Oh yeah.
2. Hey Bulldog

Verdict: Despite my love for Paul, my favorite two Beatles songs belong to John. A relatively unheralded song, I fell in love with Hey Bulldog the first time I heard it, blissfully unaware it was stuck on the underwhelming Yellow Submarine. Everything I love about She Came In Through the Bathroom Window applies here as well. So much frenetic energy. “You can talk to me!” is John at his guttural high-note best. I even dig him barking like a dog at the end.
1: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

Verdict: My favorite Beatles song has everyone bringing it for two minutes and five seconds. George starts it out with a violent acoustic guitar riff which perfectly leads into John’s opening line. “I once had a girl. Or should I say, she once had me?” Brutal. I can certainly identify with the frustration of being invited home by a girl and then leaving the next morning lonely as ever. The coldness in this song is palpable, and then it ends with lighting the girl’s fucking house on fire.

Well congrats. I have to say that I’d probably significantly disagree with a good 40-50 percent of your song rankings. But I appreciate the hell out of you doing this. Also it made me think why I do and don’t like some songs and made me revisit others. Kudos sir.
Thank you sir. I have a list for CCR as well, but man it’s tough to write about specific songs every day (and I imagine even more so when 98% of the songs are sung by the same person) so I think I’ll table that one.
