Synopsis: Grand Nagus Zek assigns Quark to initiate negotiations with a planet in the Gamma Quadrant, but Quark’s new associate is not what he seems.
Memory Alpha Summary: Rule #843: Never count on Ferengi episodes being good
Review: This could have been a touching Ferengi episode, but instead it dances between dramatic and farce and never really pulls off either.
It’s incredibly obvious that Pel is a woman from the first scene; one, her voice sounds like a female trying to be a male, and two, why else would this story exist if there wasn’t that twist? Anyway, once Quark finds out, there’s a real opportunity for his character’s growth. We get some of that, as he more or less acknowledges his feelings for this woman who defies all Ferengi law, but it doesn’t go far enough and Pel unceremoniously gets swept away to the Gamma Quadrant.
The Dominion gets mentioned for the first time. It’s kind of cool that it’s Quark who first learns about them. It makes us kind of dismiss the whole thing from the get go.
It’s incredible I don’t remember the specifics of these Ferengi episodes. I remember them turning me off in general, but these are such idiotic conceits, it’s amazing I was able to smoke away these memories. Ugh.
