The Adventures of Milo and Otis

Year: 1986
Director: Masanori Hata

Summary: The adventures of a young cat and a dog as they find themselves accidentally separated and each swept into a hazardous trek.

Times Watched: 2

My Experience: I saw this in the theater. We had a young pug dog at the time so it was right up our family’s alley. And damn, if this ain’t a super cute film. Some of the live-action shots of these animals are insane. But with rumors of animals being injured and dying on set, and knowing what I know of how the circus and Sea World get animals to do what they want, it just leaves an icky taste in my mouth. Not only that, the story is pretty choppy. If you can get past that, it’s worth a few aaaawwwwws.

  1. This was my absolute favorite movie as a young kid. As an adult it’s quite hard to watch, knowing a bit more about animal behavior and the shady methods that people use to get animals to perform.

  2. Yeah, I’m with you and nibs. This was quite adorable until I realized how many Milos and Otises they burned through making it over the course of multiple years.

I still smile when I think of my eldest daughter, years ago, giggling at the hide and seek scene, though.
