Times Watched: 2 or 3
My Experience: This is entertaining I suppose but it all feels kind of awkward from a feminist perspective. It just seems like a man-fantasy, but instead of turning a lesbian straight, it’s turning a prostitute’s life around. And what are the chances he found a street hooker who doesn’t come with any baggage or an angry pimp? I suppose that would be a different movie, though, and this is straight Hollywood. Gere and Roberts do have chemistry.
I remember when this was enormous, and I just didn’t get it. As I grew up I realized I just don’t like romantic comedies, but to this day I remain completely apathetic to Julia Roberts and wonder how she ended up so huge.
I heard some…interesting stories about her on a set a couple years ago from her brother.
Yeah, I’m trying to think of a performance by her that I really like, and I can’t. She’s not bad, per se. But I’ve never been, “Man, they nailed the casting on that one.”
