Verdict: Another song where Harrison seems to be intentionally avoiding any semblance of range. Almost monotone, and I’m also referring to the lyrics. Plus, the endless repetition of “don’t be long” gets very tiresome. And there’s that Hammond organ again I don’t like. 

159: Sun King

Verdict: Probably the least necessary song of the Abbey Road medley. It’s hypnotic at first, but the gobbledygook at the end (which pretends to be a Spanish chant) kills it.

158: Polythene Pam

Verdict: Fits in well with the medley, but has a lot of random noises and musical mistakes that make it difficult to listen to on its own. Great rhythm and it leads well into She Came In Through the Bathroom Window. 

157: Piggies

Verdict: This should probably be ranked lower, but I don’t particularly like any of the songs up this point, so whatever. I like allegory, but I like it to be slightly more subtle than it is here. It makes Animal Farm seem cryptic. I’m also not a big fan of the harpsichord or the snorting sound effects.

156: What Goes On

Verdict: The first song from Rubber Soul to show up on the countdown, the last album to have a song appear. Starr was given a writing credit, but even he admitted his contribution was minimal. I would say that also goes for his singing. An inoffensive song with a southern country bent, like something John Fogerty would do.
