Top 100 NES Countdown: Final Thoughts

Wanted to thank everyone who followed this countdown.  It was a blast to do and I think I feel satisfied now that I’ve given the NES the due I hoped to give it when I dreamed of playing of every game.  I didn’t play every game, but enough.  My blog is just over a year old now and I’ve gained some followers who don’t know me personally.  My site is mostly about me, and I’m glad some of you have found it entertaining and contributed.

Tomorrow I will introduce the next phase of Death By Troggles.  Today, I’d like to hear some of your stories.  I know some of you have shared stories in the comments, but I’m guessing there are some that haven’t been mentioned yet.  So, are there any epic moments you’d like to share?  Did you throw a controller through the window?  Did you form any new friendships because of the system?  Propose to your wife during a game of Anticipation?  Heck, just say something.

  1. Did you throw a controllerfist through the windowwall? Did you form lose any friendships because of the system?

    Yes!

    What am I going to do now for my daily fix? Maybe Nibbish is done working on another…ha ha. No. :::sigh:::

  2. We didn’t have an NES growing up, so it’s kind of surprising how many strong memories are tied to it.

    * We house sat for a family that owned one, but the house was on a lake, so our parents obviously wanted us to minimize our time in front of the TV. My brother and I would wake up every morning at ridiculously early hours to get our couple hours of SMB3 in.

    * One of my poor bastard friends had an NES, but his psycho parents only let him have bible games, so we learned to get good at those. The Angry Video Game Nerd truthfully undersells how intensely annoying these games are. I beat all of the games on the Kings of Kings cartridge, but much as I loved playing video games, there was no way I was dealing with Noah’s Ark or Baby Moses (Baby Moses is top 5 on the “fuck this game” list, alongside Sonic 2006 and hmm… that sounds like a good idea for a list. I’ll hold off).

    * I distinctly remember being 6 or 7 and having a friend of mine show me the way to get to the warp zone in Super Mario Brothers. It felt like I was being initiated into a secret society.

    * I remember playing Metal Gear as a kid, constantly dying in the desert because of the scorpions – not realizing that since I didn’t have the compass, it was an endless desert to begin with. Ditto with the endless jungle maze.

    Sidenote to that, I also remember when my mom was in the Cities with breast cancer when I was 14, my brother and I were brought to my grandma and grandpa’s. There was nothing to do there, but they had a computer, so I downloaded an emulator and played through Metal Gear. We got to the end with the computer and couldn’t blow it up because we hadn’t rescued all of the hostages, so we looked up how to cheat and get around it. That game was so close to being awesome and fun, but just about every memory I associate with it is an angry one.

    1. Peter, I laughed so much at your comment: “One of my poor bastard friends had an NES, but his psycho parents only let him have bible games, so we learned to get good at those.” I don’t think Ryan and Beau would have been very happy with me if their dad or I had given them an NES bible game instead of Super Mario or Adventures of Link! :}

  3. This is a general comment about NES memories, that were brought back to me with your blog list:
    – Playing RBI with you, Ryan and your dad, and watching you play it without me
    – Being made fun of, and being imitated, whenever I would swing my whole body to the right and left to kill a boss guy, or whatever, even though we all knew that had no effect on the game play . . . I still do that some time!
    – The joy I got from your excitement when your dad and I gave you and your brother much wanted NES games for Christmas, especially Super Mario Brothers and Link (if I recall right?)
    – I have to grapple bad!
    – And last but not least, my top 10 NES games, listed in order from #1 to #10, with regards to the pleasure I got from playing them: 1) Legend of Zelda 2) Willow 3) Final Fantasy 4) Rygar
    5) Dragon Warrior 6) Faxanadu 7) Kid Icarus 8) Fire ‘N Ice 9) Zelda II: The Adventures of Link 10) Super Mario Brothers. As you can tell from this list, I totally love RPG’s the most and still do!
