I was surprised to learn that this show was only three seasons and further surprised to learn it had 98 episodes. 33 episodes per season? Crazy.
I don’t know why I watched this as a kid. I remember thinking after nearly every episode that if they just killed Gilligan, they’d get off the island. I loathe characters whose only purpose is to be so dense that they sabotage the goals of every other character. But Gilligan aside, the other characters don’t do much for me either. The professor is kind of fun, but nearly everyone else is an uninteresting caricature.
This was occasionally on at my house, and I could never figure out why. It was always bad. In that era, even on the good shows, characters never grew or changed because networks were terrified of people missing episodes and bailing, and this was one of the worst offenders.
I had the same thoughts about Gilligan. Kill him, leave the island. Just do it. Is he likable enough to spare? Surely not.
I don’t remember who it was, but there’s some comedian who observed that Gilligan’s Island lasted 98 episodes and drew some fairly nice ratings, but it’s hard to find someone that will admit to having watched it.
I met Russell Johnson (the Professor) in 1996 or so at a Mystery Science Theater 3000 convention. He was smart, affable and hilarious.
My favorite part of this countdown will be your anecdotes from the business I’m sure.
Yeah, I guess I’ve met a lot of people and heard a lot of things over the years. If you have The Adventures of Lois and Clark on here, I’ll have a few.
D’oh. Only seen one episode. So if you want to spill the beans here, go for it.
Or you can wait for Smallville
Sigh…I definitely have comments for Smallville.
*sigh* Smallville
