When I was a teenager I kind of liked Tim Allen, yet I never watched this show much. When it went into syndication I decided to try a few episodes. The first episode I saw was mildly funny. And then I quickly realized every episode was exactly the same. I’m going to borrow a summary of wikipedia:

is very much a cocky, overambitious, accident-prone know-it-all. Witty but flippant, Tim jokes around a lot, even at inappropriate times, much to the dismay of his wife. However, Tim can sometimes be serious when necessary.

That pretty much describes the main character of every terrible sitcom. Granted, that line could also be attributed to Sam Malone. But it isn’t. Because Sam is more interesting than that (and, hey, he’s not married). Tim Taylor is obnoxious, never charming, and barely amusing at times. Al (Richard Karn) provides some decent physical humor on the set of Tool Time. But there’s literally nothing else here. The kids are…kids. The next door neighbor provides the most basic of advice that Tim somehow finds very enlightening.

I remember one joke from the show. Tim is talking about his new hot tub. He mentions the speeds are “Medium, Fast, and Who Needs A Man?” That joke should make nobody laugh who is over the age of fifteen. Granted, that was a pretty racy joke for the 90s. But shock humor dates itself very fast.
