Beatles Song Countdown: 130-126

130: Your Mother Should Know

Album: Magical Mystery Tour
Writer: McCartney
Singer: McCartney

Verdict: A pleasant song and I like the harmony, but it’s very repetitive. The lyric also doesn’t make much sense to me.

129: Girl

Album: Rubber Soul
Writer: Lennon
Singer: Lennon

Verdict: A pretty heartfelt, complex love song by John. I really like his voice here. But the interjections between each iteration of the world “girl” really grate on me. It sounds like they’re taking an exaggerated toke and it’s not very pleasant.

128: Long Tall Sally

Album: Past Masters, Volume 1
Writer: Bumps Blackwell, Enotris Johnson, Little Richard
Singer: McCartney

Verdict: A nice rendition here by Paul, but it doesn’t even come close to Little Richards’ version. It just doesn’t have the raw power of the original.

127: Octopus’s Garden

Album: Abbey Road
Writer: Starr
Singer: Starr

Verdict: A children’s song with a sad adult theme, Ringo gives this a bit more legitimacy than Yellow Submarine. If it weren’t for the cutesy underwater sound effects I’d probably like it more. George’s guitar solo is the highlight.

126: All Together Now

Album: Yellow Submarine
Writer: McCartney
Singer: McCartney

Verdict: Very much a children’s song, All Together Now became a hit for fans to chant at football matches. It definitely has a crowd-song vibe to it; about the only way to enjoy it is to sing along. Sometimes I’m in the mood for it.
