Beatles Song Countdown: 205-201

205: Dizzy Miss Lizzy

Album: Help!
Writer: Larry Williams
Singer: Lennon

VerdictHelp! is not the greatest album, but it’s solid and begins to show the promise that would come out in full force with Rubber Soul. The best part is that it ends with a huge fan favorite Yesterday. Oh wait. It doesn’t. It ends with this piece of garbage, a cover song no less. Which would be less a problem if it was stuck in the middle of the album, but it’s just so maddening sitting right there at the end. Ian MacDonald said this about the song: it’s “an unprepossessing shambles of ersatz hysteria and jumbled double-tracking.” I have no idea what that means, but I agree wholeheartedly. I regret ever listening to it and honestly I regret not ranking it lower in the countdown.

Beatles Song Countdown: 210-206

210: Wild Honey Pie

Album: The Beatles
Writer: McCartney
Singer: McCartney

Verdict: One of the few Beatles songs where literally nobody else had anything to do with it. If they had, they might have told Paul to just fucking stop it already. He admits it’s purely an experimental track (another song where there are no lyrics other than the title) that he wasn’t even considering putting on the white album until Pattie Boyd raved about it. Thanks Pattie.

Beatles Song Countdown: 215-211

215: I Wanna Be Your Man

Album: With The Beatles
Writer: Lennon/McCartney
Singer: Starr

Verdict: Lennon hated this. While Lennon hated everything, he and Paul gave this to Mick and Keith because they didn’t care about the song (and I suspect, let Ringo sing it for the same reason). The Rolling Stones released it as a single and it went to #12 on the British charts, which tells you a lot about the quality of the charts that week. Their version is slightly better, which is like saying that Baby Geniuses is better than Baby Geniuses 2. The song is almost two minutes long and there are barely more words in the song than in its title. Pure rubbish.

Beatles Song Countdown

I fell in love with The Beatles in my mid 20’s, thirty-five years after they disbanded. Most of what I knew of them until then were catchy songs in commercials and the upbeat pop tunes from their early years I’d hear on KQQL. I was blown away when I actually got my hands on the albums and got to hear some of the darker stuff. They’re one of the few bands where I know every song. That said, they still had several flaws and most of the albums had crap filler. For the next month or two I’ll countdown all 215 songs they released together. I’m not going to discuss demos, extended jams, or much of the crap that was on the Anthology albums that are barely listenable other than as a curiosity. I will say, though, that Free As A Bird is a pretty decent song. Still not making this countdown. And while I enjoy Let It Be…Naked, my reviews of the songs will be what was commercially released before I was born. In other words, all of the major albums plus the non-album singles you can find on the Past Masters collection. If there were two versions of the same song that were released, I’ll pick the one I like better (e.g. Across the Universe). The one exception is Revolution and Revolution 1. Just cuz.

2016!

I recently published the 1,000th post on this blog. I started this thing just over four years ago. Wasn’t married. No kid. Lived in a different city. I started this blog with an already written Star Trek episode countdown. I knew I wanted to write about other stuff being a child of the 80’s, hence the title of my blog. I didn’t know if I’d have this much inertia to keep it going. Thank you to my friends who still read this day in and day out and for the hundred or so strangers who have subscribed over the years. Here’s a sneak peak at some things I have in store for the year.

The Beatles Countdown: As you may have guessed, I love exhaustive lists. Then there’s no potential hand-wringing over what was left off. We’ll start the year with me counting down every Beatles song, from worst to best. I want to keep this exercise to about a month, and there are 215 songs, so I’m thinking each post will have about ten songs. That sounds about right. No need for page long articles for each entry; this ain’t Star Trek!

Other Music Countdowns: There are three other artists where I have already ranked all their songs: Creedence Clearwater Revival, Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn. I’m sure I’ll do at least one more this year, maybe more. I’m also a couple album listens away from doing the same for Ben Folds and Jenny Lewis and a few other artists. I’m starting with The Beatles, because everyone knows them. We’ll see how popular it is.

Best Interactive Fiction Games: Remember Zork? There’s an online community that has been making similar (and way, way, way better) text adventures since the 1990s. It used to be a huge hobby of mine, though I haven’t played much in the past ten years. However, I played a lot of amazing games and I should really make a list of them.

Good Smartphone Games: I don’t play smartphone games often, but when I do, I like playing good ones. And there are so many bad ones. I’m looking at you, free games that you can only win if you spend money after getting hooked. This list would probably only take a couple of weeks. Like I said, so many bad games. And I really don’t get the appeal of the tower defense genre.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Countdown: Really? Well, I hope so. Sad to say I’m still stuck in season five. But the good news is that I’ve already written up my reviews on the first three seasons. So if I can just finish the series off, I’ll get back to my roots.

50 Reasons Why I Love My Wife

  1. When she smiles her eyes sparkle and I feel all mushy inside.
  2. She’s quick to point out when I have something on my face…like 10 seconds into our first date.
  3. Whenever Joseph Gordon Levitt appears on a screen she turns into goo.
  4. Her wedding vows included references to Star Trek, Back to the Future, Corner Gas, and other similar awesomeness.
  5. Yeah, I got her to watch The Next Generation AND she loved it.
  6. I can sometimes fix a bad mood by cooking the right meal.
  7. Her exceptional creativity has improved the quality of presents I give to my own family. And the wrapping too!
  8. She didn’t say “You did this to me!” in the birthing room.
  9. She went on a road trip with me even though she doesn’t like road trips.
  10. Her favorite number is 17. My favorite number is 17. This was true before we met, on the 17th. She wanted to get married on the 17th, and didn’t mind making everyone take off a random Tuesday to make it happen. On 7/17/17, we’ll have been together 7 years. Can’t wait.
  11. She made me watch This is Spinal Tap.
  12. Speaking of meeting, she was cool when she found out I went on another date three hours after I met her. And when we ran into that person three weeks later.
  13. She financially supported me while I finished up grad school. Times would have been rough without her and I may have taken a job I didn’t like just to meet the bills. I wound up finding the best job I’ve ever had.
  14. Her support and good humor inspired me to try my hand at standup comedy for one night.
  15. Valuing experiences over stuff has helped me enjoy life more and keep the house clean.
  16. She makes my dad cookies or brownies every time he comes over. And she makes fun of him a lot.
  17. Her gentle  snoring helps me fall asleep better than any music can.
  18. She talked me into jumping out of a plane. That was amazing.
  19. She talked me into going on a cruise. That was amazing.
  20. She talked me into having a baby. That was pretty amazing too.
  21. Watching her grow into being a mother has been incredible. I learn from her resiliency, her patience, her thoughtfulness.
  22. She finds the best deals on kids clothes and toys.
  23. She drops copious hints throughout the year to make her birthday much easier.
  24. At least two or three times per week she makes me unexpectedly laugh out loud.
  25. One day our son was accosted by a paranoid alcoholic neighbor for no good reason. Not only did she confront the lady and defend our family’s honor, the lady felt so bad she gave my son a stuffed animal.
  26. On my 30th birthday she sent me all around town on a massive treasure hunt to find my birthday present.
  27. She was the first girl who said “I love you” before I did.
  28. I have become more comfortable with negative emotions thanks to her patience.
  29. Two days after she moved in with me the basement flooded and she spent the weekend bailing and ripping up carpet without a single complaint.
  30. The cat litter.
  31. Occasionally she’s the outer spoon.
  32. She gave me the best mother-in-law one could ask for.
  33. Every promotion I’ve been hesitant to apply for she has pushed me towards.
  34. She took time off from work to care for our son. He’s kind and polite and smart and (mostly) calm so I know she was great at her job.
  35. Whenever we cook together the meal tastes better.
  36. She considers my family her family.
  37. When my family visits they now have an extra clean house to enjoy.
  38. We’ve spent several nights playing Streets of Rage.
  39. She believes in not going to bed angry and for the most part I think we’ve done well.
  40. None of our money goes to jewelry or perfume or fancy clothes.
  41. Sometimes when I leave a slice of pie in the fridge it’s still there when I get home.
  42. Even though I steal the covers and sound like a freight train she still wants to sleep next to me.
  43. When I do something stupid that costs us a lot of money like getting a parking ticket or forgetting to engage the emergency brake, she mostly just laughs it off.
  44. Sometimes she pretends to like baseball. Sometimes I pretend to like Grey’s Anatomy. We work well together.
  45. She still looks sexy in jeans and a sweatshirt. Yes, yes, you do.
  46. We can be gross together.
  47. She writes beautifully. While I can create a good story, I am jealous of her ability to write prose and atmosphere.
  48. She was totally okay with me proposing to her inside a story during an online writing competition.
  49. She cares about my health without nagging me.
  50. In ten, twenty, thirty, sixty years, I know she will still be by my side supporting me in whatever I do.

51. She reads my blog.
