In recent years, televisions have gained apps and browsers while washers and dryers can give you alerts by phone as to when they’re done. Your story is centered around any real item that could be augmented by an unlikely but helpful new feature.
For this challenge, your central character has reached some degree of fame or notoriety. This fame is now in steep decline, and everyone has figured this out but the character him/herself. They can figure this out in the course of your story, if you so desire.
You’re writing the opening of a mystery novel. This by no means should be a complete story – it should be a hook that makes us want to read the complete story. It doesn’t have to include the crime that will be solved, but if it doesn’t, then it should give some indication of where things are headed.
